Description
The name Mojito comes from the African word mojo which means "to place a little spell," although the Mojito's origins are Cuban, not African. The story of Cuba's oldest cocktail dates back surprisingly to the mid-1800's onboard Francis Drake's pirate ship where the crew doctor administered aguardiente, the forerunner of today's rum, mixed with sugar, lime, and mint as a medicinal cocktail. But, it was not until the 1800's with the growing popularity of rum which eventually replaced the aguardiente that the Mojito was born. Despite, it's popularity among pirates, the Mojito was made famous in modern times due to American writer Ernest Hemingway who is known to have been a big fan and drank them at La Bodeguita del Medio in Havana as well as in Key West, Florida. In more modern times, James Bond drank one in "To Die Another Day" which too was set in Cuba.
